Hedge fund industry assets under management are at an all-time high and yet it has never been harder to grow your business. The hedge fund industry has undergone a paradigm shift in its investor base. In the early days, high net worth investors made up the majority of the LP class. In the past decade, institutional investors have become the dominant force.

Successful firms of the future must learn how to approach and services the institutional investor. For our next members meeting, we have invited several institutional investors to join us and share their perspective, as well as “Dos and Dont’s on institutional sales and client services. The discussion will be moderated by CTHFA Director David Burke, Partner and Chief Client officer of MKP Capital Management, and a veteran of the institutional capital raising business.

 

Samantha Rosenstock - Sector Head, Relative Value Hedge Funds and Private Markets at Man FRM

Samantha Rosenstock is Head of Relative Value hedge fund and Private Markets Investing at Man FRM (‘FRM’), based in New York. Samantha is responsible for the evaluation and monitoring of managers across these investment sectors and will also assist in the team’s portfolio construction process. Samantha has over 20 years in alternative asset management. Samantha joined FRM from the State of New Jersey, Department of the Treasury, Division of Investment where she served as the Head of Alternative Investments for the state’s $75 billion pension fund . In this role, Samantha oversaw manager research and due diligence and managed the pension’s strategic private equity and credit partnerships.

Prior to joining the State of New Jersey, Samantha spent seven years as a member of the hedge fund team at PineBridge Investments, formerly AIG Asset Management. Samantha started her career as a model developer and trader at R.G. Niederhoffer Capital Management, a short term systematic hedge fund. Samantha holds a BA in Mathematics from Wesleyan University.

 

Clark Cheng - Chief Investment Officer, Merrimac Corp.

Clark Cheng, CFA, FRM, joined Merrimac at the end of 2014 and is the Chief Investment Officer. Merrimac is a large single family office with investments in hedge funds, private equity, real estate and mutual funds. Prior to Merrimac, he was responsible for managing hedge fund research in the Americas for HSBC's Alternative Investment Group which had $39B in hedge fund investments across both discretionary and advisory mandates.

Before joining HSBC, Clark performed hedge fund research at Guggenheim Partners and Morgan Stanley between 2002 and 2005. Prior to joining Morgan Stanley, he worked at Credit Suisse First Boston's equity research department in 2001. Prior to that, he spent six years building and establishing West Coast Economics. Clark holds the Chartered Financial Analyst, Financial Risk Manager and Chartered Alternative Investment Analyst designations.

He holds a Masters Degree in Business Administration from Duke University and a Bachelors of Arts Degree in Business/Economics and Psychology from UCLA. He has also completed his coursework towards his Masters Degree in Psychology from California State University, Los Angeles.

 

David A. Burke - Partner, Chief Client Officer at MKP Capital Management, L.L.C.

Mr. Burke is a Partner of the firm and serves as Chief Client Officer. In this role, Mr. Burke leads the Client Solutions team and is additionally responsible for external communications and branding. Mr. Burke is a member of the Client Portfolio Advisory Committee, which includes the CIO and other key members of the Investment Committee and is designed to ensure greater connectivity and communications between the Investment Committee and the firm's clients.

Prior to joining the firm in 2011, Mr. Burke served as the Head of Strategic Initiatives at Arrowhawk Capital Partners from 2009 to 2011, leading all marketing and client development initiatives. Prior to Arrowhawk, Mr. Burke worked as the Head of Client Product Services for DEPFA Bank leading client and proprietary municipal derivatives, tender option bond, municipal reinvestments and public pension coverage businesses. In 2004, Mr. Burke was a volunteer and member of the National Finance Committee for Bush-Cheney ‘04. In 2003, Mr. Burke founded Silverhurst Group LLC; acting as full-time outsourced corporate finance and COO for a single-family office. Prior to Silverhurst, Mr. Burke was a Vice President in Debt Capital Markets at Merrill Lynch originating cash and derivatives transactions across the capital structure for clients in EMEA and the US, focusing on emerging markets and financial institutions.

Mr. Burke serves on the Board of Directors for the Connecticut Hedge Fund Association. He received a B.S. in Management from Binghamton University (1992).
